Proud of what we do

At Designed Eyes we’re proud to carry on the very old trade of spectacle making. Spectacle making  is an art form and a science combined. We work with our hands and our minds. To be a successful spectacle maker the highest degree of tactile skill is required!  One slip and  it’s ruined!  Like all art forms, spectacle  making is a bitter sweet.  The ruined lens versus the completed masterpiece of eyewear, it’s all part of the trek of the artisan.

Who makes your spectacles?

Have you ever asked yourself that question? Those things that sit on your face nearly all the day.  Were they made with love and passion or were they just part of the production process of the other few hundred pairs for the day? At Designed Eyes every pair of spectacles is made with the care and devotion you would expect from a dedicated craftsman. Each pair is special. Each pair gets the craftsman’s full attention from start to finish and nothing leaves the door until it is absolutely perfect!

Glasses repairs

At Designed Eyes we have the experience to attend to even the most intricate repairs on site. We can do solders, re tap threads, replace screws, insert new joints into plastic frames and even do welds on your acetate frame. We can also re polish your acetate (plastic) frame to make it look new again! We often re edge the lenses from your broken frame and put them into a new one for you. We service the Mornington Peninsula and the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Special needs

If you have special needs such as high plus, high minus, high astigmatism or prism then we’re very well qualified to help you. We always endeavour to keep a range of extra large eyeglass frames especially for those who require very large sizes, as well as those who require very small sizes in spectacle frames. Small round, oval or panto shapes are often best for fitting high plus prescriptions and we have the range to help you!

Is there a difference?

There are many elements of an optical prescription. Even with modern computerized equipment, a great deal of skill and dedication is required to produce perfectly accurate spectacles on a consistent basis.  Accurate both in terms of prescription and lens fit. We take up to three to four fold the time a  large laboratory to produce one pair of glasses.  You get superior vision and a more reliable product.

Glasses online

If you’re considering purchasing your next pair of glasses from an online optical retailer, we suggest you think again! Please support your local qualified dispensing optician or optometrist. They rent a shop, buy stock, pay staff all for the convenience of being able actually try on the product. They can also service your glasses and offer professional advice on your optical needs. Just think if everyone bought their glasses online and there were no local services; what would that mean to you? Please think before you buy!

Retro and vintage eyewear

We keep a great range of vintage and retro eyewear in stock. We only source from the original suppliers, which means that what we stock is genuine and new. Most secondhand or old stock vintage eyewear sold on the internet is of questionable quality, in particular any frames which are made of plastic or have plastic parts, as the plastic becomes brittle and may crack on the insertion of your prescription lenses, or soon thereafter. So if you live in or near Melbourne, why not come down to Rosebud and visit us? You can try on the retro frames here. Below is a picture of the “Ronsir” by Shuron USA. The Rayban “Clubmaster” is similar in style, however the Ronsir is the original with the Clubmaster not being released until the 1980s. So if you’re looking for a Clubmaster lookalike, why not get the original; the Ronsir by Shuron?
